5Worked immediately  Jan 06, 2008 By Adelaide
I purchased this cable after two days of troubleshooting an apparently defective Sabrent SBT-UPPC USB to Parallel 6-Foot Printer Cable. The Dynex cable worked right out of the box. Note that regardless of cable manufacturer, you have to follow the instructions carefully to initiate USB printer support in your operating system before trying to install the printer itself.

5Windows 7 + HP LaserJet 2100 Work!  May 03, 2010 By Lisa Quam
It was a bit of a pain, but it worked!

The driver CD was useless. It only contained Win98 & ME. I just plugged the converter in, and Windows 7 loaded the drivers during plug & play. Windows didn't see my printer at that point. When I tried to add a printer, Windows 7 didn't have my printer driver. In the add printer dialog, click the Windows Update button. It took a long time, but eventually it displayed three drivers for the HP LaserJet 2100. PCL6 was generically recommended by HP, so that is what I used. (HP seems to have released a generic driver that supports many different legacy printer models.) It worked!

The vendor documentation is nearly non-existent.

Dynex is Best Buy. I actually bought it in the store, but they were no help. Your reviews were much more helpful! I hope my feedback helps you!

Note: There were a lot of open box items in the store. It isn't clear if there are lots of compatibility problems or if people just get frustrated. This is NOT as simple as buying a new printer, but it was just a few steps.

5Worked immediately  Jun 25, 2010 By D. Watland
The usb port on my Brother HL-5250DN Refurbished Network Ready Laser Printer with Duplex went bad after being bumped hard. It seemed like everything else still worked. I bought the exact same printer because it worked so well for me. I kept hoping to resurrect the broken one. With a pending move I have a need for a second printer. Before buying yet another printer I thought I would give this cable a try. I plugged it into my Mac Mini 2.26 Ghz Intel core 2 duo running Mac OS X version 10.6.3 and it worked immediately... no drivers needed!

5No problems with HP Laserjet 4P, Windows XP = Plug and Print!  May 01, 2010 By Re-view-eR
It was suspiciously easy, for a USB to parallel port device.

1) Connected the Parallel end of the Dynex to HP Laserjet 4p.

2) Made sure printer was ON, RESET TO DEFAULT SETTINGS, and ONLINE.

3) Plugged in the Dynex USB end into the computer.

4) Printer and Dynex were recognized instantaneously. HP LaserJet 4p appeared under printers, and I was able to print immediately.

Too good to be true for a device that tries to bridge the gap between two different technology eras.

I have seen reports that people had trouble with HP Printers, even 4p. Well, the problem must have been something else.

Make sure you plug in the Dynex to the printer first. Also, make sure that, if you manually mess with PRINTER PORT settings in the printer driver, you go for the USB Printing port.. it may be USB001 or USB002, try them all. I had to do none of that, however. Everything set up automatically, correctly, the first time.

4It's keeping my HP 4-L alive and chugging  Aug 26, 2009 By LynnE216
I've had my HP 4-L printer since 1993 - it was my first major office purchase when I opened my own business and it's still my main printer. However, I recently had to buy a new computer and this one was the first not to have the old 25-pin serial port that used to be the standard printer connection. Since I'm by no means a computer expert, I searched around for something that looked right and ended up ordering this cable.

At first, I thought I'd ordered the wrong thing, since for some reason I was picturing plugging the new cable into the computer, then plugging the existing cable from the printer into the other end. I'm sure if I was that slow to catch on, other people will be too, so be aware, if you're not already, that the fat end of this cable plugs directly into your printer and the USB end plugs into your computer. Once I realized that, I was golden.

Based on something I'd read somewhere, I plugged the cable into the computer first, and let it recognize and install the cable itself. Only after that happened did I plug the printer on the other end, and after rebooting, Windows XP recognized right away what was happening and installed the HP 4-L. I didn't use the mini-disc that comes with the cable and I'm honestly not even sure what's on it, since I haven't had a chance to check out its contents. You certainly don't need it to make the cable work.

The only reason I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is that the fat end is REALLY fat, so fat it doesn't fit in the little compartment on my printer. I've got the door taped closed with packaging tape, and it works, but it offends my aesthetic sense and there's no actual reason they had to make the plastic casing as thick as it is. Ah, well.
